(FAST-DRY TENNIS COURT) DEFINITION OF CLAY COURTS A fast dry tennis court is made of a porous surface material of natural crushed stone, brick, or tile, that is ground, screened, well graded, and may or may not be mixed with a chemical binder to form a stable homogeneous mixture having an affinity for water. |

An annual application of approximately 1 ½ to 2 tons (per court) of surface material should be applied, depending on type of irrigation system, intensity of play, and local weather conditions. Playing lines do not need to be replaced every year. Beware of lines being torn or pulling up, or material being built up under the underneath side of the line tapes. Lines usually last three to four years (or more) depending on the amount of wear from regular maintenance and play.. PREPRATION OF CLAY COURTS In preparation for resurfacing, a fast dry court should be cleaned of debris, groomed by brushing and then rolled. The rolling process insures that all the material will bond to the playing surface. After rolling, the excess loose ("dead") material should be gathered into piles and removed from the court. Extra care should be exercised not to remove more material than is necessary. This extra material may be used at a later time for top dressing only. CORRECTION OF DEPRESSIONS (Low Spots) The correction of court depressions should be scarified to a depth of 1/8" to ¼" and filled with new fast dry surface material. The new surface material should be spread out and compacted in a dry condition, then leveled to surface grade with a special straightedge court tool, scarping off any excess materials for a professional finish. This area should be watered to full surface depth and compacted. CORRECTION OF HIGH SPOTS In areas where the surface is raised, the exposed area should be removed to 1" below surface and filled with new fast dry surface material. After the surface material is compacted and leveled, the area should be watered and rolled. INSTALLATION OF THE TOP DRESSING MATERIAL After the loose material has been removed and the depressions filled and compacted, then the appropriate top dressing material should be applied. It maybe necessary to brush, water and roll successively over several days to insure a bonding of the top dressing to the existing fast dry surface before playing. THE USE OF HIGH-TECH LASER CONTROLLED RESURFACING Fast Dry tennis courts that have lost their original slope and planarity may be regraded using laser controlled equipment, and return it to the proper slope and planarity. The courts should be surveyed on a 20ft grid, recording the surface elevations and the depth of the surface material. This should always be done before the new material is applied. After regrading, a minimum of 1" of compacted fast dry should be applied throughout the whole court surface. |
